In the early 1900s, postcards were painted by artists, printed, and mailed for just one penny, earning them the name "penny postcards." They were an affordable and charming way to send Christmas greetings to friends and family.
Many of these cards still have messages written in beautiful ink penmanship, while others contain just a quick note to a child. Artists from different countries depicted Father Christmas wearing coats inspired by their traditional costumes, with sacks filled with toys familiar to the children of their homeland.
It didn't take long for me to become obsessed with researching how different countries and cultures celebrated Christmas. Soon I was painting my own versions of Father Christmas and publishing books about my "Santas."
