The Sweetest Gift

I know some of you who know me will be familiar with this story, but I hope you’ll bear with me as I go down memory lane… again.

For over 45 years, I had a lovely little shop in Door County — filled with art, unusual gifts, and a touch of magic. Each quiet winter, my small team of artists and I would create a new collection for the coming season. It was such a creative time — coffee brewing, snow falling outside, paint and ideas flying inside.

One day, I decided to bake my grandmother’s Almond Cake to share with our customers. Soon, people weren’t just coming to shop — they came for cake and conversation.

The cake became so loved that I imported a special German pan, and before long I was experimenting with cherries, blueberries, chocolate chips — and eventually wrote my very first handmade cookbook. Every copy was stitched together with love, vintage scraps, and recipes for forty delicious cakes made from just one recipe. Over the years, more than 5,000 of those little books found their way into homes and hearts.

After I sold my shop and moved to Milwaukee, I missed those cozy days — the laughter, the smell of baking, the friends who’d stop by just to chat over a slice of cake. So, I began baking again.

And then came the idea: a new cookbook — this time about cookies.

With the help of my friend Michele, I learned to design digitally, baked every day (and yes, gained a few pounds!), and poured my heart into creating Eat Cookies for Breakfast.

This book isn’t just about recipes. It’s about friendship, creativity, and the joy of baking something sweet to share.

As Christmas approaches, I can’t think of a more meaningful gift than one made with love.
