The Patriotic Santa first appeared in America during the Civil War of the 1860s. He was a popular figure, representing the spirit of Christmas, accepted and loved by both the North and the South. President Lincoln observed that the Santa was the North’s “best recruiting sergeant.” This Patriotic Santa is on the side of all Americans. He carries a sack full of traditional Christmas toys and wrapped gifts, and a holiday tree is strapped to his back. His costume is red, white and blue with bright stars adorning his vest, hat and bag. As he raises the American flag, he symbolizes the hopes and dreams of all of the people of this great country, the United States of America. (When Pipka designed this Santa, The USA was celebrating its 225th birthday.)
