Christmas time in Mexico is both a solemn and joyous event. The festive ritual of las posadas is o reenactment of the Holy Family's search for lodging (posada means “inn"). In the dark of the night, children and adults sing special songs as they go from house to house looking for a room at the inn. The children carry candles inside paper lanterns as they weave through the village. When the innkeeper finally invites the weary travelers in, the festivities begin! There is prayer, punch and cookies. San Nicolas joins the parade, bringing the much-loved pinata filled with candy and nuts. The children then break open the pinata. Traditional Mexican ornaments of the God's Eye, clay figures and musical instruments dangle from San Nicholas's belt, and a young Mexican boy holds a guitar to join the singing!
