December 6th is St. Nicholas Day and in German households, this is a day of great celebration. On the eve of December 6th, children place their favorite pair of shoes in front of their bedroom door in hopes that St. Nick will come during the night to fill the shoes with treats of apples, nuts, oranges and candy. If the child has been naughty, St. Nicholas might just put coal or a little bundle of switches in the shoes. In those days, receiving an apple or orange in the dead of winter was a very special treat.
