Would you expect a Caribbean Christmas to be different because the island weather is warm and the scenery tropical? One island in particular, Grand Cayman, has a wonderful mix of ethnic and Christian traditions that delight all who live there or visit this paradise isle. Deeply religious, the people of the Cayman Islands celebrate Christmas as the birth of Christ and a time to gather with the close-knit community, family and friends. Christmas dinner may consist of turtle stew or a special beef dish seasoned with hot peppers and cassava, yam or plantain. However, one of the first preparations for Christmas is 'backing sand." Sand is spread and then smoothed in people's front yards and swept it into intricate designs using a twig broom. The men then place conch shells around the yard and up the walk. A wonderful coastal Christmas is celebrated.
